For UX designers, conceptual design offers a gateway to delve into abstract concepts, proficiently communicate ideas, and evoke emotions in the audience. Design concepts should accompany product teams through every step of the product process, helping them to ideate, iterate, test, surface problems, and eventually hand them off to developers to build. Remember, literally anybody can use design concepts — product managers, developers, marketers, etc. At the very least, an idea can be explored with some paper prototyping and a research participant database. Maybe your user base is always on the go or travel internationally, or most of your users are marines, and they access places with deficient connectivity. Dr. Larry Barrow, former professor of Mississippi State University, Design Research Lab, came up with the design process of Zero Dimension (0D) to Fourth Dimension (4D).

Step 4: Seeking inspiration and feedback

As an example, the kind of write-ups that you’d put in a research repository would be classified as design statements. Given what we know about fixing problems post-design phase, this could be a very costly mistake if ignored. Note their demographics, attributes, contact details, how reliable they are, and how forward they are with feedback. Product teams should be able to easily segment and contact participants based on this information. There are useful tools that can help with this, but we’ll go into that in a moment. For a quick storyboard, I use the Bikablow technique with simple line drawings that are easy to draw and communicates emotion and concept very effectively.

Maximizing user engagement with minimal actions and swift, effective issue resolution is the goal. Throughout various design stages, challenges and obstacles surface.

Narrow down concepts to a few
With a storyboard in place, you have your concept that will build the foundation for your product. These principles help artists, photographers, and designers balance their creations to create a good composition. These could be logos, menu designs, animations, colors — anything and everything which inspires the designers. For the latter, consider an ideation session that brings key members of the design (and other teams) together to make the problem and solution as concrete as possible.
Let’s say you identify an opportunity for a new project management platform for remote businesses in the wake of the pandemic. More people work from home, and you have ideas for a platform that takes remote collaboration to a new level. Think about the stakeholders in your audience and how best to communicate your design concept in terms they understand. You may gather valuable user data by distributing questionnaires to gauge their experiences of existing products. When preparing to write a design concept, the first step is always defining the problem to be solved — which may be a solo or group task.
At some point, concepts must make the leap from abstract ideas to a visual design. There are also some helpful word-based techniques, such as mind-mapping or free association. In both of these cases, you generally start with a word or phrase (for logos, this is usually the brand name and for other designs, it can be based on some keywords from the brief).
Graphic Design Skills
There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. The mission of the MIT Sloan School of Management is to develop principled, innovative leaders who improve the world and to generate ideas that advance management practice. In another example from the education field, Peruvian entrepreneur Carlos Rodriguez-Pastor hired design consulting firm IDEO to redesign every aspect of the learning experience in a network of schools in Peru. This 20-month MBA program equips experienced executives to enhance their impact on their organizations and the world. You can gather valuable insights and critical information by using product analysis and understanding competitors’ mistakes in the past. That is to choose the most suitable one for user-friendliness and appealing aesthetics.
Once the design concept is done, the design team begins executing the detailed design process and the development team builds all validated and tested solutions to bring up the MVP or subsequent beta releases. The remainder of the design process is spent executing the concept. You will use the software of your choice to create a working version of your design, such as a prototype or mockup. Assuming your design is approved by the client, test users or any other stakeholders, you can go about creating the final version.
What can design thinking do for your business?
Your design will evolve throughout development, but when you have a solid concept, your concept will anchor the whole team with a common goal and will set the vision for the product. Your product will solve a problem, and you should clarify how that works when presenting the design concept. Set up the problem, show why you need to solve it, and discuss how that will affect users. Use storytelling to engage stakeholders and help them see through the user’s eyes. Explain to stakeholders that your design concept is far from the final product and shouldn’t be compared to products that have been through multiple iterations over several years. It is made up of various pieces of imagery or text, such as photographs, sketches, and descriptions.
At the time, architectural critic Jonathan Glancey hailed the building as "nothing short of a masterpiece", while Herbert Muschamp stated it is "the most gallant building you are ever likely to see". To achieve this, acoustic tests were performed on a scale model of the building while it was being developed. However, Gehry does not and never did consider himself a deconstructivist. He has famously claimed an overarching goal for the project was to create "a living room for the city" that could make music accessible to people. More commonly used by aerospace and automotive industries, the technology allowed Gehry to transfer complicated models of the project into buildable forms and show contractors how his vision could be realised.
At the end of the day, a design concept is one of the most important practices for building an application from scratch. The prototyping can be high-fidelity and might involve continuous user interviews and A/B testing. The product team’s main focus is around finding problem-solution fit and continuously validating with users.
Even though you design for your clients, it is important to remember that your designs will serve your clients as well as the end-users. Thus, as discussed in the previous section, it is important to keep your end users’ preferences in mind. In this blog, I talk about the beginning points of all these aspects, products, and designs we come across in our lives. Ultimately, it proves advantageous to consolidate these interrelated ideas into a coherent sentence or phrase that encapsulates the concept and its objectives. This practice bolsters the concept’s cohesion throughout the design journey. Paintball, a sport with diverse forms and equipment, attracts participants from different age groups.

Earn an MA in Curatorial Practices and the Public Sphere; a studio-intensive MFA Art featuring critical exchange and curator collaboration; or a studio-based MFA Design degree focused on contemporary practice. With no requirement to specialize in a medium, you can focus on what’s relevant to your needs and interests.
A conceptual design is the basic perception that drives a product’s design, described through images, some sketches, or a written statement. This is useful for both designers and developers to stay on track all across the creative methods. A design concept makes sure to help you bring your product to market with value to your target users. Design thinking is a methodology which provides a solution-based approach to solving problems.
